ReDeath to ReDux

This is an enhanced-to-show-detail look at the various changes made to the original cut (henceforth referred to as OC) of ReDeath in creating the ReDux version. This list was written assuming the reader has seen both versions.

GENERAL

-All Evangelion footage was recaptured from the R2 Renewal of Evangelion DVD set, graciously loaned to us by Eric Kobet. Renewal was released in the US (minus the movies) by ADV Films as Evangelion Platinum.

-All of Misato’s “phoned-in” lines were rerecorded by Emily, reprising her role. Select lines were also rerecorded for Shinji, Gendou and Ritsuko by their original actors due to being at too low a volume in the OC mix.

-Ambient sound added to several scenes.

-All title cards redone.

EVANGELION REDEATH

-”This is how Evangelion ReDeath was meant to be done.”
This is a nod to a similar title card that opens Evangelion Death True^2, itself a revision of Evangelion Death.

-Studio Sokodei logo added.

-The main title was moved to after the melon patch scene between Shinji and Kaji. This was where it was in the original outline. The main title screen was redesigned from its original version due to being the chief reason ReDeath has often been erroneously written as Re:Death.

-Transitional footage has been added between the Misato/Ritsuko elevator scene and the first appearance of Gendou. In the OC, many scenes ended with a cut to black. ReDux removes most of those black gaps.

-Shinji hangs his head after being told “this isn’t Giant Robo.”

-”Smile” gag added just after Misato’s “great makeout spot” line.

-It no longer rains when Misato brings Shinji to her apartment.

-An added shot during the DI$NEY conference emphasizes the “phallic reference” on Unit 01′s head.

-A flesh-colored mosaic now appears over Kaji’s crotch during his “heimlich” conversation with Ritsuko and the post Pikachu/Ryo-ohki fight sequence. This effect was planned for the OC but left out due to my technical inexperience at the time, though it turned out the widescreen framing of the OC cut him off below the waist anyway. Also, Ritsuko now moves during Kaji’s “roll, don’t fondle” line.

-New (deleted) scene: After the “breasteses” scene, Shinji wanders the streets to U2′s “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For”. A version of this scene was made for the OC but left out. History repeated itself as this scene was removed from the final cut of ReDux (but can be seen in the Extras on the DVD).

BIG BALLS

-The “Big Balls” video was not remastered but it was recut for better sync with the music.

THE REVENGE OF THE END OF EVANGELION

-The Tenchi Muyo! cast getting squashed was also not remastered.

-The Pikachu vs. Ryo-ohki fight and all preceding Pikachu inserts were reshot. The new fight scene also uses a different edit of the Mortal Kombat music. Interestingly, the new version clocks in a few seconds shorter than the OC’s.

-Post-fight, Kaji has a Kenshin-esque “Oroo…” reaction to Misato’s “KAAAAAJIIIIIII!” moment. Dialogue between Misato and Ristuko was expanded (“Fine.” “Fine.” “Fine.” “Fine.”…).

-Shinji choking Asuka has been expanded into a mini-fight sequence.

-Different punchline to “Tequila” sequence.

-New scene: Gendou’s Answering Machine. In the OC script, this was to fall just before the cut to DI$NEY in the post-”Bohemian Rhapsody” sequence. The idea was that DI$NEY was trying to call Gendou, but when they couldn’t reach him they had to come up with their own method to counter Pikachu: Ryo-ohki. But the answering machine would’ve broken up the momentum of the sequence, so it was removed. But we were still fond of the machine gag, as it was the very first Gendou bit we concocted once his “pimp” persona was established and we were happy to finally find a place for it.

-Insert shots of Prince’s The Hits CD added to “old school” and “Second Impact revelation” scenes.

-Kaji’s “1999″/Second Impact revelation is one of the best examples of how much better edited ReDux is. Unlike in the OC, continuity is maintained in the characters’ spatial relationships. Misato and Shinji don’t teleport aroud the room anymore and once Kaji sits down, he remains seated. Also notable is that this is one of only two scenes from the OC for which we still had all the original recordings, which is why it provides the bulk of the DVD’s outtake reel. Rather than having to sync the remastered video to the OC’s audio like most of ReDux, we were able to reconstruct this scene entirely from scratch.

-Shinji’s line “Actually, I think he’s just known as The Artist now.” changed to “Actually, I think he’s back to being Prince again.” Prince had started calling himself Prince again just months before the OC premiered, making the joke already obsolete when it was first shown.

-Ritsuko’s “second job” is the other scene for which we still had all the original recordings and it also was recreated from scratch. A previously unused line from the original sessions (“Give it a little squeeze for me.”) has been added. Transitional footage added between Ritsuko’s “second job” and Shinji’s last argument with Gendou.

-Third Impact Prince Logo shot redone. Shot of world going down toilet (literally) added (another gag from the original outline). Longer black silence before final scene.

-End credit Gendou call back moved to near end of credits.

The Song Has Been Altered in Post-Production

December 8th, 2008 by Andrew

I’m currently working towards getting The Song Remains The Same mastered to DVD before Christmas. Thankfully, converting the burned-on subtitles of the Fanime/YouTube version to a removable DVD subtitle stream is easier than I would’ve guessed. I’ll take one last stab at converting Song for 16:9 display, but I’m not expecting much. Right now, I’m testing the sub timings for the main feature, after which I’ll convert the subs for the trailer and the deleted scenes and then start the DVD authoring.

However, I did make one last edit to the movie, and it’s significant enough that I decided to replace the YouTube upload that contains the scene affected (Part 8). My biggest disappointment with the game’s story is that the villain is not defined very well. In an effort to fix this, I rearranged some dialogue so that the details of the villain’s ultimate plan are now revealed earlier. It’s a small change, but one that makes the story a little more coherent (In the original staging of the scene, Faye and Kent seem to be responding to revelations they haven’t heard yet) and adds more tension to the ensuing big three-way brawl that originally occurred before this information came out.

Selfishness and Failure

Shortly after The Song Remains The Same was posted to YouTube, I found this blog post in which the writer tries to tie the game story’s thematic elements with that of the series proper. I responded with some thoughts of my own in the post’s comments.

Follow Your Nose

At Sakura Con in Seattle, WA earlier this year, someone asked Escaflowne‘s character designer Nobuteru Yuuki if he’d ever seen a little fan parody called Nescaflowné:

Press: Have you seen the fan edit of the Escaflowne movie titled Nescaflowne, and how do you feel about people playing with your designs and spoofing them and whatnot?

NY: I have not actually seen that movie, but would be very interested in doing so. but generally I am not a character designer who feels the need to have complete control over everything I draw. If fans create something like a doujinshi or cosplay, or even fan dubs I feel that in a way it shows how well liked my characters are. So I generally like to see people enjoying my designs.
